  • How she’s supporting the Waymark team and clients

  • The fun story behind her two dogs, Kalúa and Phoebe

Hi, and welcome to another edition of Coffee with Wayark! Today’s episode is a little bit different from some of the others. We’re excited to introduce you to the newest member of the Wayark team: Jennifer.

Jennifer has been helping us with the more administrative tasks associated with the job. Back in February, we realized that we needed someone to support us in that area. So, we started asking around—friends and family—and I actually have the original text I sent out. I’ll read it for you:

“We’re looking for an administrative assistant. Someone personable, since they’ll be talking with clients. Someone who doesn’t need to be babysat and sees clients as people—not just checkboxes on a to-do list. Someone with professional experience who may have taken a break from the workforce and is now looking to return.”

That search led us to Jen.

Jennifer, can you tell us a little about your background? I think it’s a pretty unique path for someone looking to take on an administrative role in a financial planning firm.

Jennifer:

Hi, everyone! I actually moved to Massachusetts a couple of years ago from South Florida. I started my college education studying nursing. I was a registered nurse and worked in pediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care, and the pediatric ER. That’s where I began my career.

As my son got older, I wanted to be home with him more. Around that time, I started watching HGTV and saw real estate agents showing clients three houses—and then they'd pick one! I thought, “Wow, I could do that.” I tried balancing both nursing and real estate, but eventually I fell in love with real estate and chose to leave nursing behind. That became the next chapter of my life.

When my son graduated college and decided to go to law school, we got a letter from New England Law in Boston offering him a full scholarship. At first, we thought it was a joke—but it wasn’t. He came to Massachusetts, fell in love with the area, and told us he wasn’t coming back.

My husband was getting ready to retire and said, “Maybe this is something we should look into.” So, we moved to New England.

Brendan:

Tell us a little bit about your husband—he’s had a really cool career too.

Jennifer:

Yes, he just retired this February. He was a Battalion Chief with the Coral Springs–Parkland Fire Department and served there for 36 years. For the last two years, he was commuting, but now he’s up here full-time.

I had planned to do real estate here, but it’s very different—the market, the homes, the structure. I get lost going to the supermarket, so I figured maybe not! I hadn’t been working for a couple of years, and I missed it. I’m a people person—I love helping and working with people.

So, I started looking for something that would speak to me. When my cousin Kathy heard about the message you sent out, that’s how I connected with you. And the rest is history!

Brendan:

Awesome. Tell us a little bit about what you do day to day—how you’ve been helping clients and what you’re looking forward to as you grow in the role.

Jennifer:

So far, I’ve been answering emails, handling scheduling, sending confirmations, pulling performance reports, and starting to learn the phones. I’m hoping to take on more responsibilities soon—especially helping out with some of the tasks Hanifeha’s been doing. That way, she can grow in her role, and I can learn more as well. I’m looking forward to expanding what I do here and continuing to support the team however I can.

Brendan:

We were talking earlier about event planning. We’ve done events in the past but kind of got away from them. I think your experience in real estate could really help with that.

Jennifer:

Oh, I’d love to help with that—charcuterie boards, sip-and-paint, wine tastings... I’m all in!

Brendan:

Perfect! Let’s wrap up with a fun fact. Tell us something fun about you, your husband, or your life in general—something the clients might enjoy hearing.

Jennifer:

I’m an animal lover. I have two mini Australian shepherds. Kalúa is eight and loves to steal my Uggs. That’s her thing—she just wants you to chase her around the house. Her little tushy wiggles like crazy!

Phoebe is four and thinks she’s the house’s police officer. She chases Kalúa around with the Uggs, and they run up and down the stairs all day. They’ve kept me company and so happy, especially while my husband was commuting.

My son is blossoming into an attorney. My husband is retired now. We’re entering a new chapter in life—and I’m excited about my new role here at Wayark. We’re loving New England and everything it has to offer.

Brendan:

Awesome stuff. We’re really happy to have you here, Jennifer. Thanks so much for sharing!

And thank you all for joining us today. Remember: Be well and do good.
